A termination cap must be installed with the unit.  With direct-vent gas units, they can be run either vertically or horizontally.  A horizontal termination will always show on the side of the house.  A vertical termination can either be installed through the roof, as pictured above, or in a chase, as pictured below.  The nice thing about venting through a chase is that you can decorate it to match the rest of the house, rather than have a steel smokestack coming through the roof in the front of your house.
