A fireplace screen began as a shield between the occupants of a room and the discomfort of extreme heat from the fireplace. Modern screens serve much the same function and contain any sparks or embers that may escape. Screens come in a wide variety of designs and can be made from metal sheet, wire mesh, and glass. Fireplace screens also provide a decorative accent with or without a fire.
